Class G driver's license
In Ontario, the driver's license for ordinary cars is divided into 3 grades: G1, G2, G. Let's introduce them one by one. https://drivetest.ca/licences/drivers-licences-cars.html
G1 License function:
The most basic ID card in Ontario can replace a passport. This is for safety reasons, and in some cases, using a driver's license can be more effective and efficient than a passport, arguably more widely used in Canada. You can drive accompanied by someone who holds a G license for more than 4 years (usually a coach), and the escort must sit in the co-pilot seat. But no freeway and no driving between midnight and 5:00 am. Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt.
Exam: The exam is in the form of a computer-based exam. G1 does not need to make an appointment, you can go directly to the driver's license test center to take the test, you need to bring your passport. All multiple choice questions, https://drivetest.ca/tests/knowledge-tests.html.
The topic type is divided into 2 parts:
Part I: 20 multiple choice questions. Recognize street signs and traffic lights.
Part II: 20 multiple choice questions. traffic rules.
The correct rate of each part must be 80%, otherwise it will not count. If you fail any of the Parts, you will need to pay an additional $15.75+tax to retake the test until you pass.
G2 License function:
It can also be used as an ID card in Ontario.
Can drive on their own (over 19 years old) and can drive on highways. But everyone in the car must wear seat belts.
Exam: The exam is in the form of a road test. The G2 Road test needs to go to the Hamilton Driver's License Test Center to take the test, and it needs to be booked online in advance. Mainly examine the following:
Part I: Turn left and right, go straight, and stop at traffic lights and no traffic lights.
Part II: Changing lanes.
Part III: three-point turn.
Part IV: On-street parking, including pull over (stop directly on the road) and parallel parking (parallel parking)
There are 100 points for each part of the test, and 70 points are considered a pass. However, if there are serious mistakes, such as: running a red light, running a Stop Sign, changing lanes without looking at the rear view mirror and blind spot, hitting a curbstone or other people and cars, etc., it is judged as dangerous driving and fails directly. If you fail the G2 test the first time, you will need to pay $52.50+tax to take the test again.
G License function:
In Ontario, it can also be used as an ID card and can drive by yourself.
The G license is lifetime, but needs to be renewed every 5 years.
Exam: The exam is in the form of a road test. The G Road test needs to go to the Hamilton Driver's License Test Center to take the test, and it needs to be booked online in advance. Mainly examine the following:
Part I: G2 all content.
Part II: Emergency Stop on the side of the road in the city.
Part III: Freeway driving (including lane changes on the freeway).
If you fail the G Road test, you need to pay $89.25+tax to retake the test.
Experience:
The first registration fee is about $158.25+tax (2017), including one G1 computer test and one G2 road test. It is recommended that you go to Lindsay, Oshawa, Belleville to participate in the G2 and G Road tests, because the difficulty of road tests in these areas has decreased in recent years. You don't need to drive on the 400-level expressway, which is very crowded and has complicated road conditions, and all road tests will not reverse the car and put it in the garage.
A domestic driver's license can drive a car for 3 months in Canada, but a corresponding translation of the driver's license is required. The 3-month period is counted from the first landing in Canada. If you take the G1 test, you can no longer use it, so you can't drive by yourself when the G1 test is over for the G2 test. https://www.ontario.ca/page/drive-ontario-visitors
If you have been driving in China for two years, and carry the certificate of no accident (or certificate of no violation record) issued by the domestic vehicle management office and the translation of your driver's license (see Attachment 1), you can take the G test directly without waiting period after completing the G1 test. But there is only one chance, if you do not pass, you will start the test from G2. https://drivetest.ca/licences/licence-exchanges/foreign-licence-experience-credits.html
If you have a domestic driving experience of two years, but do not carry the certificate of no accident (or certificate of no violation record) issued by the domestic vehicle management office, you cannot take the G test directly after completing the G1 test, but you can directly test the G2 test. It should be noted that the G1 and G2 driver's licenses belong to the (novice class), which is only valid for 5 years. The validity period starts from the time when the G1 driver's license is obtained. After the validity period, if you don't get the G License, you need to start the test from G1 again. https://www.ontario.ca/page/renew-expired-drivers-licence#section-3
If your address changes, you will need to change the address on your driver's license. For international students, the driver's license address cannot be changed on the Service Ontario website, because it requires an OHIP medical insurance card number, and the insurance purchased by international students is UHIP. These two cannot be used interchangeably. A better way is to go to Service Ontario in person. Office changes. Just get your old driver's license and a new lease. After the modification, a new driver's license will be sent to you. The whole process is free.
Driver's license translation required for domestic arrivals: domestic driver's licenses cannot be translated by themselves or domestic translation agencies, and must contact Canada's certified translators (MTO-recognized translators)

Driving school
You can attend a driving school to prepare for your driver's license test. Driving schools usually include theory lessons and driving practice, and the practice method is one-to-one teaching. https://drivetest.ca/tests/resources/beginner-driver-education.html
When you attend a driving school, be sure to check whether it is an approved driving school on the official website of the provincial government: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/driver/driving-schools.shtml
After taking the G1 exam, you need to wait at least 12 months before taking the G2 exam. If you apply for a driving school and complete all theoretical courses, you can get a driver's licence history, which can shorten the waiting time to 8 months. Of course, if you are not in a hurry to take the G2 exam, and for the sake of saving money, you can also not participate in the theoretical course of the driving school and not get the general certificate. According to the introduction on the official website, the general certificate can reduce the cost of insurance after buying a car. For details, see the fourth title of the official website: https://www.ontario.ca/page/order-drivers-record
If you have many years of driving experience in China, and you have been abiding by various traffic rules and experiences, you can take the G2 or G test directly without a waiting period according to the law. At this time, you can contact the Chinese coaches in the driving school to prepare for the G2 Road Test and G Road Test, and take the test as soon as possible. However, it is strongly not recommended to take the test directly. After all, the traffic rules of the two countries are still much different.
International driver's license
After you obtain the G License, you can apply for an International Driving Permit (International Driving Permit or IDP). With an International Driving Permit, you can rent a car while traveling in the United States or European countries. In Canada, international driver's licenses are granted by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), and each grant is valid for 1 year. You can apply repeatedly.

Canadian driver's license to Chinese driver's license
Not only the Chinese driver's license can replace the test of some Canadian driver's licenses, but the Canadian driver's license can also replace the Chinese driver's license test. But in many provinces, only a G driver's license is allowed, G1 and G2 are not allowed.

The specific provisions are Article 34 Anyone who applies for a motor vehicle driver's license with an overseas motor vehicle driver's license shall take the examination for subject one. Those who apply for a motor vehicle driving license of the type permitted to drive are large passenger cars, tractors, city buses, medium-sized passenger cars, and large trucks, and must also take the examination for subject three.
